Views of the World

Everyone has a world view, a collection of beliefs and attitudes that affect how they perceive and contribute to the world. Some believe that the Earth works like a machine that can be manipulated and controlled. Others view the planet as a living entity, from the global mother that the ancient Greeks called Gaia, to recent descriptions of the Earth as our Home Place.

In ancient Greek mythology, Gaia is the goddess of the Earth. Her son, Anateus, retained his strength as long as he was in touch with his mother and was defeated only when Hercules held him aloft. To some, Anateus has come to represent modern society.
